In reviewing the Union County School District, it is important to understand both the geography of the district and its demographics.  Union County is geographically the smallest district in the state. It is nestled in rural northeast Florida approximately one hour from the Florida/Georgia line and thirty minutes north of the University of Florida. Due to the close proximity of three state prisons located in the county, the largest employer within the district is Department of Corrections. School and Church are the foundation for all activities throughout the county. Our county is family oriented. Its rural setting provides for strong family and community values. We offer a quaint environment that is an hours drive from some of the finest academic, medical, cultural, and historical sites in the State of Florida. We can bale hay, show livestock at the Fair, and shop at Saks Fifth Avenue all in the same day. We agree with Union county resident, Jay North of Dennis the Menace fame, when he said, “Union County is truly the best kept little secret in Florida.”

School and community involvement is a priority in our district. We enjoy successful business partnerships with Pritchett Trucking, Roberts Land and Timber, Vision Realty, TD Bank and Community State Bank.  The churches in Union County are frequently involved in assisting schools when needed.

Our school district consists of six schools. They are Lake Butler Elementary serving grades PK-4, Lake Butler Middle School serving grades 5-8, and Union County High School serving grades 9-12, Union Juvenile Residential (DJJ) Facility serving males grades 6-12, and Union County Adult School serving adults in our community. Our student enrollment is currently 2,346 students. To serve these students we have approximately 324 employees, which breaks down to approximately 163 instructional employees, 150 non-instructional employees, and 11 administrative employees. Approximately 59% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Our minority population is 21%. The percentage of ethnic groups in the district is 79% white, 17% African American, 3% Hispanic, and 1% Multiracial. The student base has been stable for the past three years, and our mobility rate is minimal.
